Afternoon
For the afternoon, we recommend a visit to Hohensalzburg Fortress: the medieval castle is the city’s landmark. It is home to exciting museums, but also offers a marvellous panorama of the city and the surrounding countryside as far as the mighty mountain peaks to the south. A wonderful walk leads from the fortress over the wooded Mönchsberg to the Museum der Moderne, which is also an original film location. From here, you can take the Mönchsberg lift back to the old town and on to Mirabell Gardens with the Heckentheater, the Zwergerlgarten and the Pegasus Fountain, which is also featured in the film. www.salzburg-burgen.at | www.salzburg.info

Day 2

Full-day excursion
Today we are travelling to the south of Salzburg and into the mountains. The small town of Werfen is around 50 minutes by train from Salzburg Central Station. The Hohenwerfen adventure castle, which forms the backdrop for the famous picnic scene from ‘The Sound of Music’, can be recognised from afar. The Sound of Music Trail is an easy and well-marked hiking trail that leads from the centre of Werfen to the beautifully situated picnic meadow. Enjoy a short hike in the middle of the mountains!
The starting point is the Werfen Tourist Office, Markt 21. www.bahn.at | www.werfen.at

In the afternoon, head up to the imposing Hohenwerfen adventure castle: Construction of the defence system began in 1077. Discover the medieval castle on a guided tour or with an audio guide. The castle is also home to the historic Landesfalkenhof falconry centre: during spectacular flight demonstrations with birds of prey such as hawks, eagles and eagle owls, you can experience the ancient hunting method of falconry, which has since been recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. www.burg-hohenwerfen.at

Day 3

Morning
The Hellbrunn trick fountains are one of the most beautiful and exhilarating sights in Salzburg. It is the over 400-year-old park of the Hellbrunn pleasure palace, which can be visited as part of a guided tour. Water plays the leading role here: it splashes out of fountains, in grottos and from water dispensers and does so completely unexpectedly and unexpectedly. What fun! A refreshing spectacle – ideal for hot summer days! In Hellbrunn Park, you can also visit the garden pavilion, which plays an important role in some of the film scenes from ‘The Sound of Music’. www.hellbrunn.at

Afternoon
In the afternoon, there’s cooking: the Edelweiss Cooking School in the city of Salzburg offers cookery courses on a variety of topics. But there are always traditional Salzburg specialities on the table that have been around since the time of the Trapp family. For example, ‘apple strudel and Salzburg dumplings’. www.edelweiss-cooking.com
Round off the afternoon in the city of Salzburg with a traditional horse-drawn carriage ride. The beautiful carriages and Landau carriages are parked on Residenzplatz.
