Day 1 ‘Best of the city of Salzburg’
Morning
The city of Salzburg is the ideal size for exploring on foot: There are numerous guided tours of the city, during which you will get to know the most important sights. A speciality is offered by ‘The singing Guide’ Trudy Rollo. As part of ‘Sound of Trudy’, she takes you to the filming locations of ‘The Sound of Music’ and is happy to sing.

Also charming: ‘Fräulein Maria’s Bicycle Tour’. Salzburg is a cycling city par excellence. A hire bike takes you through the old town, but also out to Leopoldskron Palace and Hellbrunn Palace. With songs and the wind in your hair! www.mariasbicycletours.com
Afternoon
Continue exploring the city on your own: visit the Hohensalzburg Fortress (ascent by train possible) and then walk over the Mönchsberg to the Museum der Moderne. From the panoramic terrace there you have a magnificent view over the city of Salzburg, and the museum is always worth a visit.
You can either take the Mönchsberg lift (a lift in the mountain!) or walk down via Mülln church, Müllner Steg and Mirabell Gardens with the Heckentheater, Rosenhügel and Zwergerlgarten.

Day 2 ‘Hallstatt & Mozart’
Morning
The UNESCO World Heritage town of Hallstatt lies at the foot of the mighty Dachstein and is considered one of the most famous and romantic lakeside towns in the world. Its history is long: here you will find the oldest salt mine in the world, medieval alleyways and facades, the fascinating ossuary with its artistically painted skulls and, of course, the emerald-green Lake Hallstatt. The bus tour, including a tour of the town, takes a good six hours. The tour starts at 8.15 am at Mirabellplatz in the city of Salzburg. www.panoramatours.com
Afternoon
Back in the city of Salzburg, the programme includes a visit to Mozart’s birthplace. The house in the famous Getreidegasse is one of the most important sights in Salzburg. W. A. Mozart was born here on 27 January 1756: together with his sister Nannerl, the two were regarded as child prodigies. Mozart’s most famous operas include The Magic Flute, Don Giovanni, The Abduction from the Seraglio and Cosi fan tutte. These are regularly performed at the Salzburg Festival.
Afterwards, you can visit Mozart’s house on Makartplatz or take a horse-drawn carriage ride. www.mozarteum.at

Day 3 ‘Up the mountain’
Full-day excursion
Today, the hop on/hop off bus takes you to Grödig/St. Leonhard, just outside the city of Salzburg. From here, the Untersbergbahn cable car takes you up the 1,805 metre-high Untersberg in nine minutes. This high alpine mountain peak offers a phenomenal view of the city of Salzburg and the entire surrounding area as far as Bavaria (Germany). The Dalai Lama once even described the legendary Untersberg as the ‘heart chakra’ of Europe. Short hikes and a stop at a mountain hut are possible at the mountain station.

Day 4 ‘Sound of music and water games’
Morning
The ‘Original Sound of Music Tour®’ is an absolute must for anyone who loves the famous musical film starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. Comfortable coaches (small or large) take you to the original film locations, such as Leopoldskron Castle, Lake Wolfgangsee and Mondsee Basilica. An unforgettable experience! The tour starts at Mirabellplatz in the city of Salzburg – singing along is encouraged! www.panoramatours.com
Afternoon
The ‘Amadeus Salzburg’ is the only ship that travels on the Salzach: the panoramic ship docks at the Marko Feingold jetty in Salzburg’s old town. From here, it travels upstream to the ‘Hellbrunn landing stage’, where a London double-decker bus is already waiting to take you onwards. It takes just five minutes to reach the enchanting Hellbrunn Palace and its trick fountains. After a guided tour and visit, the bus takes you back to the historic city centre. www.salzburghighglights.at | www.hellbrunn.at

Day 5 ‘Music – all day long’
Morning
In the morning, take the local railway (26-minute journey from Salzburg main station) to the small village of Oberndorf. It was here that the world-famous Christmas carol “Silent Night! Holy Night!” was performed for the very first time by its two creators, Joseph Mohr, who wrote the lyrics, and Franz Xaver Gruber, who composed the melody. Take a walk to the Silent Night Chapel, visit the delightful Silent Night Museum and walk across the Salzach Bridge to Bavaria (Germany). https://fahrplan.salzburg-verkehr.at | www.stille-nacht-museum.at
Afternoon
A guided tour of the Salzburg Festival Theatre is a special experience. In its more than 100-year history, the Salzburg Festival has developed into the world’s most renowned festival for opera, theatre and concerts. It brings international opera stars, soloists, actors and the great orchestras to the city. The one-hour tour of the festival theatres, the Felsenreitschule (a Sound of Music filming location) and the Haus für Mozart also takes you behind the scenes. www.salzburgerfestspiele.at
Anyone interested in Salzburg’s past should visit the DomQuartier. It reflects the more than thousand-year history of the prince-archbishopric of Salzburg, which was part of the Holy Roman Empire and bursting with wealth. This wealth is visible throughout the city’s architecture. The DomQuartier is a museum of a special kind: it provides an insight into the position of power of the prince-archbishops, who were both secular and spiritual rulers. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart played in the state rooms as a boy. The small afternoon concert ‘Date with Mozart’ takes place here every Thursday and Friday at 4 pm. www.domquartier.at
