Exhibition ‘Sound of Music – Insight and Outlook’

From 2026, there will be a ‘Sound of Music’ museum in Salzburg-Hellbrunn for the first time. A preview of this can already be seen in the anniversary year at Schloss Leopoldskron: On display are exhibits from the collection of Dutchman Roger Pluijm, who has collected material relating to the film ‘The Sound of Music’ over a period of 25 years.
Schloss Leopoldskron is one of the most famous filming locations for ‘The Sound of Music’. The scenes in the garden pavilion were filmed here and the castle’s Venetian Room served as a model for the ballroom in the film: it was completely recreated as a backdrop.
A little insider tip: you can have a Hollywood-style breakfast at Schloss Leopoldskron – even if you’re not staying overnight.

Music theatre ‘The Sound of Music’

In America, people love the Salzburg Marionette Theatre. No matter where the ensemble of actors and puppets performs, all performances are usually sold out well in advance. Since 2007, the musical ‘The Sound of Music’ has also been on the puppet theatre’s repertoire in its home country – including in its anniversary year. Ten puppeteers and 60 marionettes sing and dance to the original music, which was recorded exclusively by Broadway singers and the Istropolis Philharmonic Orchestra Bratislava. The performance lasts 90 minutes and is in English. The performances will take place from May to October 2025.

Anniversary exhibition ‘Dirndl meets Hollywood’

Have you ever worn a dirndl dress? No, then it’s high time you did. To mark the anniversary year, the traditional Salzburger Heimatwerk is creating its own ‘Sound of Music’ dirndl dress. There is also a special exhibition in the historic cellar vault. This revolves around the themes of traditional costume and customs in connection with the film ‘The Sound of Music’. The Salzburger Heimatwerk and the Salzburg Museum are both located in the Neue Residenz directly on Residenzplatz, which is also one of the film’s locations.

‘The Sound of Music in the Park’ at the Salzburg State Theatre

Every summer, the Salzburg State Theatre invites visitors to an unforgettable theatre experience in the park of Schloss Leopoldskron. While this evening usually revolves around the works of William Shakespeare, this year visitors can look forward to ‘The Sound of Music’. From 8 June to 9 July 2025, a total of eleven evenings are on the programme, focusing on the life of the Trappe family and its film adaptation.

Musical ‘The Sound of Music’

The musical ‘The Sound of Music’ can be seen on seven evenings in November and December 2025 at the Salzburg State Theatre: What an experience! It’s just as if the ‘Trapp Family Singers’ were returning to their homeland. The Salzburger Landestheater is one of the most beautiful theatre venues in the city of Salzburg. At the end – together, of course – they sing: Look forward to the special moment of a sing-along.
The dress code is casual; no evening wear required.

‘Indulgence a là Sound of Music Menu and cookery courses, Salzburg’

At the Edelweiss Cooking School, amateur chefs learn how to prepare typical Salzburg dishes, just as they (could) appear in the film: These include pulled apple strudel as well as crispy pretzels or the world-famous Salzburger Nockerl.
For those who prefer to simply enjoy – without cooking – the 5-star Hotel Hyperion, not far from Mirabell Gardens, is the place to be: chef Michael Daus has created a delicious menu based on the ‘Sound of Music’.
